About

Dr. Simerson’s research and scholarly interests include translating evidence into practice and population health with a concentration in smoking cessation, opioid abuse, disaster preparedness, and emergency nursing issues. She completed the DNP in 2016 and conducted a scholarly project entitled “Emergency Nurse Initiated Brief Smoking Cessation Intervention”. Dr. Simerson is also interested in the recent developments surrounding electronic cigarettes and vaping and the concerns that these may serve as gateways for cigarette smoking for young people. The current concern about the “opioid crisis” is of particular interest to Dr. Simerson as prescribed opioid abuse has been recognized in the emergency department as a significant societal and health problem for quite some time. She is currently serving on a local hospital committee looking at multidisciplinary solutions to this growing problem and has been invited to serve on an interdisciplinary panel discussion on the topic of opioid abuse in the Chicago area.
